Hi Everybody,
Fudgie asked me to pass this along:
Wow! What a week it has been! In the midst of my furious preparations for Father’s Day (my favorite holiday of the year), Carvel’s name hits the newspapers and gossip columns. Who knew I was so famous? As Carvel’s official “Spokeswhale,” I feel it is my duty to respond to the black cards which have become the topic of much media coverage this week.
To those of you who support our handling of the recent unfortunate incident: THANK YOU! You are a whale of a friend for life!
To those who don’t understand why we gave Carvel Black Cards to celebrities in the first place, please allow me to explain. We issued 75 cards to 75 celebrities to commemorate one whopper of an anniversary (I look good for 75, don’t I?). These celebrity friends were chosen based on their known love of Carvel (and me, of course), proximity to our shoppes and because we saw them as being positive ambassadors for the good old Carvel name.
While we did offer free ice cream for 75 years with each card, we knew most would likely never be used, or at the least, not abused. They were not given with the intent to provide massive amounts of free yumminess to people who certainly have the flow to afford it themselves. We simply wanted to get Carvel’s anniversary milestone in the news and bring our Franchise Partners, who like all small business owners are struggling in this yucky economy, more customers. All in all, this goal was met when cool celebrities like Kelly Ripa, Howard Stern and Martha Stewart thanked us (and in some cases me) publicly for the gesture and shared their love for Carvel with their fans. Love you, Kelly! Rock on, Howard!
My Franchise Partners and I are heavily involved in our communities. From sponsoring children’s sports teams, to supporting the efforts of such organizations as the Boys and Girls Club of America, state blood centers and local charities and events. We also give out free ice cream to everyday guests – the true Carvel brand ambassadors – on a regular basis. Just this April 29th, we gave away over 250,000 cups of our new low fat ice cream to any and all who participated in our official kick off to spring. And, this September 23rd we will be giving away free ice cream again to Guests as part of our annual “Customer Appreciation Day.” Also, don’t forget that every Wednesday is still Sundae at Carvel! Buy one get one free! Holla!
To those of you who have recommended giving black cards to some “Regular Joes” we say: good idea! I am currently working with the peeps at Carvel to see how we can make that idea happen. Keep up with my Facebook & Twitter sites for the latest on that.
Thanks again for your continued support. I hope we can all swim past these rough waters & return our focus this weekend to all of you fathers out there! Have a whale of a Father’s Day!
Swimmingly Yours,

I love you, Fudgie!
I think most people understand and support you guys. Good for you all for not caving in to so-called famous people like most places would.
Bravo!
Just one question: Why do celebraties, who most certainly can afford to purchase the majority of things in life, seem to be the ones to receive or have the opportunity to receive so much “free” stuff???
I am not rich and would love to have opportunities like this come my way here and there.
This is the first I’ve heard of Carvel, but I’m going to do my best to look for it and buy some now.
Keep up the great work.
TEAM FUDGIE
You are too cool! I’ve never even had Carvel before but I’m now a huge fan based on how classy you guys are.
I love you, too, Fudgie! <3
can you still get “Fudgie the Whale” ice cream cakes? It was my favorite as a kid
